Mardi Gras Fat Tuesday Celebration Begins

The nation begins its celebration of Mardi Gras Tuesday.  Mardi Gras means “Fat Tuesday” in French and is also known as “Shrove Tuesday” in the UK.   It is the last “feast day” before the Lenten period which starts on Ash Wednesday.

Mardi Gras has become known in New Orleans as a party time with jazz music, beads, and people in fancy masks lining the streets. Most all businesses and streets are shut down for this holiday.  The day will be filled with music, parades, floats, and picnics.

One of the traditional Mardi Gras food is King Cake. King Cake is circular cake decorated with the colors of Mardi Gras using purple, yellow and green sugar.  These colors represent justice, faith , and power.  Somewhere inside the cake is a little plastic baby which is supposed to represent the baby Jesus.   As a tradition, the person who gets served the baby gets to provide the next King Cake.

Mardi Gras will end exactly at the stroke of midnight. No matter what is going on, this is when the party ends as police mounted on horses clear the streets for the street cleaners to do their job.

Detroit Symphony Orchestra Season Ends Early

 – Members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra have been on strike since October, and as a result today the remainder of the season has been suspended. The musicians turned down a final contract offer from management, and the orchestra ‘reluctantly’ released the conductors and musicians from their contracts.

The remainder of the season’s concerts, scheduled through June, have been suspended. Rescheduling the concerts, completing the 2011 summer season, and announcing a schedule for the 2011-2012 season is still possible pending a settlement.

Orchestra members are planning to seek a compromise agreement, and are eager to resume talks quickly and finish the current season. Chairman of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra board of directors, Stanley Frankel, released a statement saying that the orchestra is also ready to talk.

The union for the orchestra says that higher medical costs coupled with lower pay proposed in the contract will make it very difficult for the company to recruit the best talent. There are also disagreements over how much of the orchestra’s time should be spent on community outreach.

Shia Lebeouf

 – Shia Lebeouf, a 24 year old actor and star of “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” was handcuffed briefly and then released early Saturday morning. The incident happened outside Mad Bull’s Tavern in Sherman Oaks, CA.

According to eyewitnesses, the actor was taunted by a patron inside the establishment, and then “sucker punched in the mouth.” At this point they took the conversation outside. When local Los Angeles Police Department officers showed up on the scene the tension dissipated. Officers weren’t called, but happened to be driving by. LeBeouf was briefly put in handcuffs while the police assessed the situation and asked questions.

Police Department Sgt. Taylor of the Van Nuys division said that the patrons picking on LeBeouf fled the area before police got there. The owner of the bar, Richard DiSisto, said, “It was just boys being boys. Things got really out of hand and it didn’t have to go down the way it did. No one needed or should have gotten hurt, things could have been dealt with in an entirely different way.”

Posted by on Tuesday, 1 February, 2011

Katie Holmes will play Jackie O

 – An eight part miniseries based on the Kennedy family will be aired on the ReelzChannel starting April 3. Originally intended for the History Channel, the series cost $30 million to produce.

A rep for A&E Television Networks, the umbrella under which the History Channel operates, said this about the decision to not air the show, “After viewing the final product in its totality, we have concluded this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand.”

ReelzChannel CEO Stan E. Hubbard stated “We don’t enjoy controversy or want to pick a fight, but the history is the history. When you watch this, there are incredible successes and unbelievable tragedies. The family stays together and they’re loyal to each other and to the country throughout the highest highs and the lowest lows.”

“The cast put their heart and soul into this, and with great care to accuracy of circumstances and visuals,” he went on to comment. “We’re so thrilled and proud of being able to step up and help this story be told that they so carefully created.”

The miniseries stars Katie Holmes as Jackie O and Greg Kinear as John F. Kennedy.

Wood Is Signed To Be In “The Hobbit”

Elijah Wood - Photo By Dysepsion

 – Actor Elijah Wood’s rep has announced today that the star of the “Lord of the Rings” films will have a role in the next installment, “The Hobbit.” Wood had stated in the past that he would only be a part of the project only as his character from the other “Rings” films, Frodo. This was unlikely because the “The Hobbit,” is a prequel to the series, and takes place before Frodo is born. To include Wood in the movie, director Peter Jackson has been able to work Frodo into the tail in such a way that Elijah approved.

At the onset of talks about the film, Wood told MTV, “I would imagine that if he [Frodo] does exist, it’ll make some sort of sense. Otherwise, I don’t think they would do it. I certainly wouldn’t want to do it. I don’t want to have a whole character piece that doesn’t really exist that they’re cobbling together.”

After seeing Jackson’s character and story development, the 29 year old actor commented that he’s confident  “in whatever they’re going to do in terms of bringing in any familiar characters back, just knowing their sense of upholding integrity.”

 – A well known nightclub in Las Vegas has filed for bankruptcy, but will remain open for operations as it reorganizes its almost $5.7 million worth of debt. The club, Beso, is owned in part by Hollywood actress Eva Longoria. It’s located at the Crystals mall in a resort complex known as CityCenter. Beso owes nearly $1.8 million in rent to CityCenter, which is owned by MGM Resorts International and Dubai World.

Attorneys for the beleaguered club stated in a federal Chapter 11 filing that they estimate the venue will lose more than $76,000 per month. Reports show that Longoria gave a cash loan of over $1 million and paid $375,000 in legal fees for the project so far. She owns almost a third of the business, and is also listed as an unsecured creditor.

She got her start as an actor on the daytime series The Young and the Restless, but is best known for her recurring role on ABC’s Desperate Housewives.

Lohan May Have Violated Parole

Posted by on Tuesday, 4 January, 2011

 – Lindsey Lohan has been out of the Betty Ford Center for one day and she may be in violation of her parole already. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department says that Lohan potentially may have to go back to jail for 180 days for allegedly assaulting a former Betty Ford Clinic employee.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Lohan may have violated her probation when she allegedly assaulted former Betty Ford Clinic staff member Dawn Holland on December 12. Since the incident, Holland has been let go from the facility, and dropped charges against Lohan on December 23. Despite this, authorities are planning on sending the results of an investigation into the battery charges to the district attorney’s office. It will be up to the DA’s office to decide whether or not to press charges. Holland is not cooperating with the investigation.

If the 24 year old star violates the rules of her rehab program before her court date on February 25, she will be sent to jail. Her probation is slated to end in August, according to L.A. Superior Court Judge Elden Fox.
