 – National Geographic has just announced its nominees for the annual Adventurer of the Year award, and one of them is a surfer from Australia. Usually the award goes to a global circumnavigator, trekker, or tracker, but Jamie Mitchell is just as daring and accomplished as his rivals for the honor. At 33, he has nine Molokai to Oahu paddleboard titles, and he can hang on the best waves as well.

Mitchell regularly does 50 km paddles as part of his training. Quite often on these treks he gets blown off course, and the Coast Guard is sent out to find him. Many times they haven’t been successful and have left him for dead, but somehow he has always managed to find his way back to land.

On NationalGeographic.com Mitchell talked about the Molokai to Oahu race. “You can put ten guys in the race with the same physical ability and they end up at much different points. I’d say at least 30 or 40 percent of Molokai is mental — dealing with pain and setbacks and the sea. The tides and what the wind is going to do are a huge part of the race, and I used to really worry about them. But now I’ve learned to take it as it comes.”

There are nine other nominess this year for the Adventurer of the Year award, and the winner is determined by popular vote. Voting ends on January 15th, and the winner will be announced in February.
